Tuesday March 7th to April 11th@ 8pm
Sandford Parish Church in Ranelagh is organising an exciting series of concerts during Lent – these will take place every Tuesday from March 7th to April 11th at 8pm. The first five concerts are organ or organ and soprano recitals, given by organists David Adams, David Leigh, David Bremner, Mark Duley and Andrew Johnstone, and sopranos Tara Eraught and Elizabeth Hilliard.
A great variety of music is being presented, including operatic arias by Handel and Mozart, Liszt’s Prelude and Fugue on the name BACH, Couperin’s Premiere Lecon de Tenebres, an all-Bach Lenten recital by Mark Duley, a selection from Guy Bovet’s Tangos ecclesiasticos, Anton Heiller’s Fantasia super ‘Salve Regina’, Kenneth Leighton’s setting of George Herbert’s poem of renewal ‘These are thy wonders’ and much more.
The series concludes with the Irish premiere of Karl Stirner’s St John Passion. In this contemporary rethink of the Passion story, the composer’s desire to focus on the ‘human’ elements of the story is reflected in the intimate scoring (4 soloists, choir, string quintet and organ) and the understated but highly vivid musical gestures.
