She was Chief Medical Officer to the Irish Citizen Army, took part in the 1916 Rising, campaigned for treatment of VD, founded St Ultan's Hospital for Infants, the first of its kind in Ireland, was elected to the Dáil but being anti- Treaty, didn't take her seat, elected to Rathmines Town Council, pioneered the use of the BCG vaccination against TB, commissioned work from the emerging architect, Michael Scott and much, much more. She was kind, humane, innovative and committed and her whole life was spent making others' lives more bearable.
