But Frollo was forced by the Archdeacon of Notre Dame to raise Quasimodo as his own. Now a young man, Quasimodo is hidden from the world by Frollo in the belltower of the cathedral. But during the Festival of Fools, Quasimodo decides to take part in the festivities, where he meets the lively gypsy girl Esmeralda and the handsome soldier Phoebus. The three of them find themselves ranged against Frollo's cruelty and Quasimodo ultimately is forced to defend both Esmeralda and the cathedral itself.

Mein Leben für Irland is one of a number of wartime feature films produced by Joseph Goebbels, using Ireland's struggle for independence as pro-Nazi propaganda. Mein Leben für Irland tells the story of the son of a rebel who is sent to an English boarding school to be forced to 'think English'. He leads a revolt in the school during the Irish War of Independence in 1921, sabotaging the British invaders.

introduced by leading Irish film director Lenny Abrahamson, who directed the critically acclaimed Adam and Paul, award-winning Garage and Prosperity (written by Mark O’Halloran), the brilliant drama series currently on RTE 1 televsion.

8pm | €8/€5

Director: Federico Fellini (1957)

Cast: Anthony Quinn, Giulietta Masina and Richard Basehart

La Strada centres on the world as seen through the eyes of a childlike woman, Gelsomina (played by Fellini's wife, Giulietta Masina), who is taken on as an assistant by a brutish and uncommunicative travelling strongman, Zampano (played by Anthony Quinn), who barely treats her as a person. When an encounter with a circus clown awakens a new sense of herself, the violent response of her master breaks something within her and she leaves him to travel alone. La Strada won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956.

A selection of short films: Farewell Packets of Ten, Scoring and Tongue Tied by local film company Venom Productions, will be screened, representing the work of award-winning director Ken Wardrap and producer Andrew Freedman. The Cullenswood Singers, formed in 1997 by musician Liobhan Boylan, are based in Ranelagh. The repertoire of this 36-member choir includes classical, modern and sacred choral music. The choir has competed in choral competitions as well as at invited performances. Their annual Christmas Carol Concert in Beechwood Church, Ranelagh, draws a large audience, as does their appearance annually at the Ranelagh Arts Festival.

In this, their 10th anniversary year, the Cullenswood Singers will perform Vivaldi's Gloria in D major, RV589, and a selection of madrigals. The Gloria consists of 12 movements and is one of Vivaldi's best-loved choral works.

Oíche Cheoil

The Cullenswood Singers will be joined by soprano soloist Emily Alexander (who will take a break from her music studies at the Conservatoire of Livorno in Italy) and contralto soloist Rosemary O'Brien. They will be accompanied by organist Charles Pearson.

Also featuring in this performance of Vivaldi's Gloria are The Dublin Viols. This group was formed in 1980 as an offshoot of the Consort of St. Sepulchre, a group that specialised in Medieval and Renaissance music from Europe. Both groups have performed all over Ireland and in parts of Europe and recorded for BBC and RTÉ radio and television. The Consort of St. Sepulchre recorded for EMI and The Dublin Viols recorded with Dead Can Dance.

The Dublin Viols features Jenny Robinson and Laoise O'Brien on recorders, Andrew Robinson (director), and Lucy Robinson, Honor Ó Brolchain and Anne Robinson on viols. This Medieval musical instrument, the viol or viola da gamba, has six strings and frets, and is similar to the violin but held vertically. It was originally brought to Italy from Spain by the Borgias.

Once again, Helen Dillon will open her world-famous garden and house as part of the Festival. She has spent the last 35 years creating one of the most beautiful town gardens in Ireland. Set around a canal surrounded in Irish limestone, the mixed borders of shrubs and herbaceous perennials reveal unusual plants and exciting colour combinations, including rarities such as lady's slipper orchids or doubled-flowered Trillium.

On the sunken terrace, terracotta pots sprout more rare plants. Clumps of angel's fishing rods (Dierama) arch over the sphinxes and a small alpine house and conservatory shelter the choicest species, including what is considered the most beautiful climber in the world - the national flower of Chile, Lapageria rosea (named after Napoleon's wife). The front garden is paved in pink Chinese granite.

During the afternoon, the Cullenswood Singers will perform madrigals in the garden.

For insurance reasons, only babies-in-arms and children over 12 can visit the garden.

Helen Dillon's Garden Book will be published by Frances Lincoln in November 2007.
